How to upgrade existing SCORM courses with AI - without rebuilding your LMS

Did you know that according to the LinkedIn Workplace Learning Report 2025, 49% of learning & development leaders report that their managers are concerned that employees don't have the skills they need to execute business strategy?

And a survey by the Chief Learning Officer Business Intelligence Board(CLO BIB Survey 2024) shows that 65% of organisations still deliver soft skills predominantly through classroom training - an indicator that digital course content is often not updated to reflect the times.

This means that employees often use outdated content that neither meets their current work situation nor fulfils contemporary learning expectations. A direct result of this is that employees leave the learning environment in the middle of the course to clarify questions with Google or colleagues - a massive loss of efficiency.

Problem: Outdated content, inefficient learning experience

Industrial companies with extensive SCORM-based learning catalogues are particularly affected. Creating content once and using it unchanged for years is understandable - after all, every update costs time, money and resources.

However, this leads to current questions and challenges in day-to-day work not being answered, which in turn leads to higher support costs and lower learner satisfaction.

Solution approach: fast AI integration via script

Netresearch is currently working intensively on the question of how existing SCORM courses can be supplemented with AI functionalities without changing existing LMS infrastructures.

One current development approach is a lightweight Python script that can enhance existing SCORM packages with AI features. The aim is to provide users with an accompanying AI tutor during the course that answers technical questions directly in the learning context.

Optionally, the chatbot can be supplemented with mini-quizzes to check understanding and provide targeted feedback. We are currently investigating how such functions can be seamlessly integrated into SCORM standards and what technical and pedagogical benefits this will bring for companies.

Possible added value: Less effort, more efficiency

This type of extension could offer many advantages in the future:

Benefits for learning managers

  • Greater learner retention and less support effort
  • Updated content at no extra cost
  • Satisfied users, lower cancellation rate

Benefits for specialised departments

  • Fast knowledge transfer, fewer questions in everyday life
  • Measurable learning success through integrated quizzes
  • Saves time in everyday working life thanks to direct access to knowledge

Benefits for the IT department

  • No changes to the existing LMS infrastructure
  • Simple integration without great effort
  • Minimal maintenance, maximum reliability
