TYPO3 v14 Release: What does the new LTS version really bring?

TYPO3 v14 was officially presented on 21 April - and we followed the release together with the community here in Leipzig. Between pizza, beer and a good atmosphere, it quickly became clear that this release aims to do one thing above all else - make TYPO3 simpler and more accessible. But what is really behind it? And what does it actually mean for customers and developers?

A few impressions from our joint release evening in Leipzig:

How does TYPO3 v14 improve the backend and workflows?

The revised backend is one of the most visible changes. TYPO3 looks more modern, more structured and in many places even more user-friendly than before. New themes significantly refresh the backend. Guided processes - for example when creating pages - and the new context panel ensure that editors can achieve their goals more quickly.

This is particularly noticeable in everyday use:

  • Less familiarisation required
  • Clearer orientation in the system
  • More efficient content maintenance

Another key promise is visual editing, i.e. editing in a live preview of the page. This is precisely where we are currently taking a particularly close look: We are testing the feature in our own setup and checking how well it can be used in real projects - especially with customised content elements.

How does TYPO3 v14 help with structured content maintenance?

One point that was rather overlooked in the presentation is the improved control of content structures. TYPO3 makes it much easier to define which content can be used where. This was also possible in earlier versions, but often only via detours such as TSconfig or customised solutions. With v14, this approach is much more accessible and practical. This can make a real difference, especially for larger projects.

This brings clear advantages:

  • more consistent content
  • Fewer errors in the editing process
  • Less training required

Which new features are really relevant in everyday life?

In addition to the larger topics, there are also smaller additions that quickly offer added value in everyday life. These include short URLs and the ability to generate QR codes directly in the system. These are not spectacular features - but exactly the kind of improvements that simplify processes and make TYPO3 a more rounded platform overall.

What are the most important technical innovations in TYPO3 v14?

Even if the release itself hardly focuses on it: TYPO3 v14 is a major technical update with over 200 new features and many structural changes.

Some points stand out in particular:

  • modernised APIs around TCA and FormEngine
  • Fluid 5 as the new template basis
  • New resource and asset handling
  • heavily revised EXT:form

For developers, this primarily means a clearer, more consistent basis. At the same time, however, the pressure to adapt existing projects is also increasing - especially due to breaking changes and stricter requirements for existing setups.

What role does AI play in TYPO3 v14?

The topic of artificial intelligence is currently very present among many customers - which makes it all the more striking that it hardly plays a role in the release itself. TYPO3 v14 deliberately does not include any integrated AI or chatbot functions in the core. Instead, the topic remains with extensions and individual API integrations for the time being.

This is exactly where our approach comes in: With our TYPO3 extension nr_llm, we are creating a central, provider-independent basis for AI applications. It enables the connection of various providers such as OpenAI, Claude or Gemini via a standardised interface. Building on this, we are also currently developing the first TYPO3 AI agents that can take on specific tasks in the system.

This also shows the fundamental approach of TYPO3: instead of integrating AI directly into the core, a flexible basis is being created on which project-specific solutions can be built. Technically, this is a sensible and future-proof approach. At the same time, we would have liked a little more orientation in the release - especially in view of the high demand for AI-supported editing and content processes.

For whom is TYPO3 v14 worthwhile?

TYPO3 v14 is clearly aimed at different target groups - and brings noticeable improvements for everyone. For editors, the focus is on better usability. Companies benefit from more efficient content processes and a more modern platform. And for developers, v14 offers a much tidier and future-proof technical basis.

Our conclusion: Is TYPO3 v14 worth it?

TYPO3 v14 is not a radical change - but a very consistent step forward. The improved user experience, clearer workflows and technical modernisation work well together.

We are currently testing TYPO3 v14 in our own setup and are looking at the new functions in detail. At the same time, we have already analysed TYPO3 v14.3 internally and aligned our TYPO3-related tools and quality checks with the new LTS basis. The focus is particularly on

  • Visual Editing in practical use
  • New content workflows
  • Use in existing projects

The next few weeks will show how TYPO3 v14 performs in everyday use.
