Public good technology: TYPO3 now officially recognised as Digital Public Good
A significant milestone for the TYPO3 project: the content management system has been added to the international register of digital public goods by the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA). This makes TYPO3 one of a growing number of technologies that serve the global common good - freely accessible, openly developed and sustainably orientated.
What are digital public goods?
"Digital public goods are technologies that contribute to solving social challenges worldwide - through openness, accessibility and responsible development. The DPGA, supported by the UN Secretary-General, is examining this, among other things:
- Open source licensing
- Data protection and security
- interoperability
- Inclusive and sustainable governance
Well-known examples in the DPG register include Wikipedia, the DHIS2 health information system and the Primero child protection system.
Why TYPO3?
TYPO3 fulfils these criteria in many respects:
- Open source since 1998: TYPO3 is open source, free to use and is being further developed by an international community.
- Responsible structure: The Swiss TYPO3 Association coordinates the development - independent, non-profit and democratically organised.
- Worldwide use: TYPO3 is used in over 120 countries - including in digitalisation projects in the Global South.
- Future-proof technology: Flexible, secure and scalable - for websites, e-government portals, educational platforms and more.
Inclusion in the DPG register is therefore no coincidence, but an expression of consistent orientation towards the common good.
"The DPG certification is an important validation of the work TYPO3 is doing to promote open source values worldwide. Our digital transformation projects in regions such as East Africa demonstrate the power of sharing combined with TYPO3's coherent strategy and sound governance principles. The certification is a seal of approval for the reliability and integrity of the TYPO3 project and will further strengthen its role as a tool for the common good when working with global partners."
- Daniel Homorodean
Head of the TYPO3 Community Expansion Committee
Why is this important?
Digital public goods are a key instrument for promoting digital sovereignty, education, access to information and sustainable development worldwide - regardless of commercial interests. Recognising TYPO3 as a Digital Public Good therefore brings several advantages:
- Seal of trust: the DPG certification emphasises TYPO3's reliability, independence and quality.
- New opportunities for the public sector, educational institutions and NGOs: As an officially recognised Digital Public Good, TYPO3 offers a future-proof, trustworthy and sustainable solution - ideal for digital projects with added social value.
- Contribution to the global sustainability goals: As a Digital Public Good, TYPO3 actively contributes to achieving theSustainable Development Goals( SDGs) defined by the United Nations - for example in the areas of inclusive education, equitable institutions or sustainable digitalisation.
Conclusion
The recognition of TYPO3 as a Digital Public Good shows that open source technologies are far more than just technical tools: they can become the pillars of a fairer digital future. With this award, TYPO3 joins the ranks of important global projects - and once again emphasises how powerful, responsible and future-oriented the CMS is today.
