Automated CI/CD pipelines for a bank infrastructure

In cooperation with IT specialist Comwrap Reply, a highly secure and high-performance hosting environment was set up for the Magento 2 shop of a bank specialising in foreign notes and coins, precious metals and travel money. Reply is responsible for the support and further development of the shop, while Netresearch takes care of the automated provision of application changes and the provision of security patches for the necessary services (PHP, web server, Varnish, etc.).

CI/CD concept with Docker

As none of the usual cloud solutions were an option, it was decided to host the application on the bank's internal systems. Security concepts and compliance rules of the banking industry are crucial here. Netresearch worked closely with Comwrap Reply to develop a suitable CI/CD concept. The application code is held in Docker containers and these are rolled out to the bank's infrastructure via automated CI/CD pipelines.

Monitoring and automatic rollouts

During the operation of the Magento 2 shop (Adobe Commerce), Netresearch is responsible for the basic monitoring of the application as well as the containers used and their up-to-dateness. This also includes applying security patches via nightly builds and securing the deployment routes. For Comwrap Reply as the supporting shop agency, this makes it easy to implement any rollouts. Changes only need to be checked in to Git and the entire deployment process to the respective instances (DEV, STAGE, PROD) runs automatically from the agency's perspective. The implementation was carried out using the following technologies: CI/CD with Gitlab, Concourse CI and Ansible

Advantages for the bank

Thanks to the co-operatively developed solution, the bank now has a secure and efficient hosting environment. The shop can be continuously developed further. Digital service provider Reply can concentrate on shop development and does not require any additional DevOps expertise for this project. With automated processes, security gaps can be closed as quickly as possible and the security of the shop can be guaranteed. Our many years of experience in the DevOps area therefore benefit both the bank and Comwrap Reply in their day-to-day business.
